The coming-of-age story of a young boy and his pet deer in the Florida Big Scrub, “The Yearling” was the best selling novel of 1938 and is still one of the most beloved books ever published, both here and abroad. Its author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings fell in love with Florida, hit her stride as an author while living in nearby Cross Creek and is buried not far away in Island Grove. The book captures the beauty of the region and the strength and dignity of its people.
